Monday May 19th SPECIAL VICTORIA DAY MONDAY SHOW -

Last week Dave Trafford talked about the Toronto Sports Leadership Program that gives high school students from at-risk neighbourhoods  the opportunity  to be community recreation leaders this summer. Dave will talk to one of those students. 

Food and Community Advocate Nick Saul won this year's Jane Jacobs prize for his work.  Today Dave will talk about the new 10,000 sq. ft. facility "The Stop Community Food Centre" is planning at the former Wychwood TTC street car repair barns.  

Rose Reisman will be in to talk about  BBQ tips. 

Plus, we'll talk to a volunteer from a group that is building a $70,000 state-of-the-art playground at Lord Dufferin School in Regent Park.  Volunteers will be working throughout the week to build this playground for the children and others in the Regent Park Community.

Thursday May 1st - A Torontonian whose work has quietly changed the face of this city was honoured as the recipient of the ninth annual Jane Jacobs Prize.  Food activist Nick Saul won the Jane Jacobs prize for his pioneering work at The Stop Community Food Centre where its staff and volunteers grow about 1,000 kilograms of produce every year in their 8,000 sq. ft. garden.  That produce is served at drop-in breakfast and lunch programs as well as put into food hampers for low-income families who often find it challenging to get healthy food. Marc Garneau, Canada’s first astronaut in space, unveiled today the newly refurbished CA Planetarium at the Ontario Science Centre. Toronto’s only public planetarium now has state-of-the art multimedia technology thanks in part to a five-year contribution from enterprise software company CA Canada.  The new CA Planetarium has a cutting-edge combination of projector technologies, state-of-the-art 3D digital software and imagery based on real-time data that will allow audiences to feel as though they are flying through the universe. The planetarium show provides visitors of all ages with a spectacular view of thousands of objects in space, such as stars and galaxies beyond the Milky Way.  CA Canada contributed $275,000 to refurbish Toronto’s only planetarium and help promote science and technology education.  Check out the website for more information on the new planetarium.

Tuesday April 29th - 10-year-old Amanda Belzowski will be handing out lemonade in support of the Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart on Sunday May 4th.  Drop by her Lemonade Stand at 10 Brian Cliff Drive (Lawrence/Leslie area) from 11 am to 2pm.  You can also donate on-line.  Check out her website here.

Dr. Roberta Bondar is calling on all Canadians to share their memories with her as she launches her mission to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease.  If you'd like to know more about this, check out this website.

Monday April 21st - Parents can keep track of all their children's vaccinations with a new online tool called "The Mother of All Immunization Trackers".  Check it out here.

This week Canadian students will mark Nelson Mandela's 9th birthday and raise money and awareness for South Africa's youth.  If you would like more information or would like to help, check out their website.

Wednesday April 16th - UMOVE (United Mothers Opposing Violence Everywhere) is holding it's second annual youth talent showcase on Sunday April 20th at Steelworkers Union Hall at 25 Cecil Street (spadina and college).  Anyone wishing to participate or get more info about the event can call 416-819-8628 or check out their website here.  Proceeds from the event will go to support UMOVE.  


Monday April 14th - The Township of Severn has issued flood warnings for the area.  Here is a list of what to do in the event of a flood.

Monday April 7th - 4-year-old Rowan Jack was born with congenital myopathy, a muscular disorder that leaves him unable to walk, talk or feed himself.  His family would like to bring him home but can’t afford the $40,000 it would cost to retrofit their home.   Ron Murdock, a retired Bell Canada manager heard about the family’s plight and is working to help raise money for them.  Murdock has gathered donated and discounted materials, lined up a contractor and tapped volunteer groups for $10,000.  The Whitby Sunrise club is hosting a fundraising dinner next Monday April 14th at the Desiam Thai Restaurant in Whitby to chip away at the $10,000 still needed.  For more information call Ron Murdock at 1-905-579-6792  Donations can be made at Millwork Home Centre 1279 Simcoe St. N. in Oshawa.

Wednesday April 2nd - The 21st annual Images Festival (Toronto's 2nd oldest film festival) goes from April 3-13th.  The Images Festival is a multifaceted media arts festival showcasing over 130 artworks in film, video, gallery installation, live performance and new media.  For more information about the festival check their website.

Tuesday April 1st - The City of Toronto has an online survey asking people what food they would like to see served by the new food carts.  If you'd like to fill out the survey click here.

Tuesday March 18th - The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) today released its first report looking at the economic burden of illness on acute care hospitals.  For more information on this report click here.

Going green just got a whole lot easier.  The newly-formed Toronto Conservation Action Network is organizing five community fairs across Toronto to help connect people with the organizations and companies that can help them live better through conservation.  To get more information and Eco-fair locations check out their website.

Monday March 10th - Today is the last day for advance polling in 4 by-elections which take place Monday March 17th.  Advance polling time:  noon to 8pm.  Two of the ridings are in T.O. (Toronto Centre and Willowdale). This advance poll also marks the start of new regulations requiring voters to carry identification. In order to cast a ballot, voters must have one piece of I-D such as a driver's licence or passport or two pieces of I-D -- such as a utility bill -- showing the voter's name and address.  If you're eligible to vote in this by-election and would like more information check out the Elections Canada website here.

Wednesday March 5th - Canadians don't know their stuff when it comes to home, car and business insurance. So Insurance Bureau of Canada has launched an entertaining campaign to give Canadians the information they need to properly protect themselves and their possessions. At the same time, IBC is providing free, downloadable software to help homeowners and tenants create a home inventory for insurance purposes.  Check out their website for more information.
