Drivers may have to "park" their cell phones
The McGuinty government could soon be putting the "brakes" on using a hand held cell phone or blackberry while driving. The province is preparing legislation to ban "distracting electronics" which could be introduced as early as this fall.
Listen to Lisa Naccarato's report on a possible cell phone ban
Last November the premier told reporters he had no intention of banning the use of cell phones while driving saying. "Where do you draw the line?" But in late May McGuinty changed his stance, asking his transportation minister Jim Bradley to look at legislation that would cover a range of distracting gadgets. That bill could be ready when politicians return to Queen's Park in late September.
PC transportation critic Frank Klees calls this another "big brother" idea that isn't needed.
"There are laws in place provide up a $1000 dollar fine for drivers who drive distracted. What's wrong with enforcing existing laws?"
Klees calls a cell phone ban another "dog and pony show" aimed at grabbing headlines.
