PCs and NDP slam proposed plan to bring sports betting to casinos

Las Vegas style sports betting could be on its way to a casino near you... that's according to a Toronto Star report which says the province and federal government are in talks to allow casinos to take bets on individual sporting events.

But neither opposition party is ready to gamble on the idea.

Although PC leader John Tory isn't dismissing the idea of allowing sportsbooks in casinos, he doesn't think it will help Ontario's economy or tourism industry in the longer term.

"This is not a solution, it's a sideshow.  It's something we can have a discussion about but I just worry that they're placing their priorities on something like this and not addressing the real problems."

But New democrat Peter Kormos takes a strong stand saying the province isn't doing a good enough job to keep problem gamblers out of casinos and debt.

"So unless and until the province addresses its responsibilities, it's irresponsible to discuss expanding gambling opportunities."
