The TTC hopes to be fully wheelchair accessible by 2017, three years earlier than originally planned. Right now 28 of 69 subway stations are accessible and retrofitting four subway stations per year will cost $348 million.

"We need help from the provincial government to the rate of about $9.5 million a year in terms of sped up capital funding to address more stations being retrofitted," TTC Chair Adam Giambrone said.

"We believe it is possible, it will be a challenge in terms of engineering to have that many stations undergoing renovations at a time, but it is possible," Giambrone added.

Meanwhile, the TTC is holding a public meeting on May 20 between 7 and 9pm at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Riders are invited to give ideas on how to make the TTC better for customers with disabilities.
