St. Phillip's Pantry has been saved for now. The Parkdale foodbank that serves over 600 low-income families will keep its doors open till after Christmas thanks to personal and private donations. But at a morning rally, over two dozen foodbank users and volunteers called on the government for long term funding.

"It is essential. This is one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Toronto and it is the only foodbank that serves the area and for it to close would be devastation for all of us," Gregor, a volunteer said.

Mark lives in Parkdale and relies on St. Phillip's Pantry. "Tis the season to get your wallet out, we could really use your help."

Meanwhile, MPP Cheri DiNovo handed over a personal cheque for a $1,000 and is urging others to open their hearts this holiday season. "When you think about your shopping list for Christmas you might want to think about St. Phillip's and donate."

DiNovo is also calling on the province to raise the minimum wage to $10/hour and to build 28,000 affordable housing units over the next four years.
