Katie Franzios reports on police dumping a "don't tell" proposal.

The Toronto Police Services Board has decided to dump a proposal that would have blocked officers from telling federal authorities if they suspect immigration violations when dealing with witnesses or victims of crimes.

This, after 444 individual petitions were given to the board, pleading for it to institute a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy on immigrant status when talking to witnesses or victims of crimes.

Listen to CFRB's Katie Franzios's report.

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair says if it comes to an officer's attention that the person they are dealing with is an illegal immigrant, police have no other choice than to report them to the proper authorities. He says if he instructed his officers to look the other way it would be breaking the law.

Community groups say this decision will deter thousands of people to report crimes such as domestic violence for fears of being deported.
