Toronto police, and the Ministry of Transportation conducted a heavy truck enforcement blitz on Tuesday at Cherry Street, near Commissioner Street.

Listen to CFRB's Cheryl Camack's Report.

Looking for anything from flat tires, to unsafe loads inspectors pulled over truck after truck for inspection.

“We try to do a blitz like this once a month,” says Glen Dodwell of the MTO.

Depending on the infraction driver as well as employers can be fined for offenses. Some of the more common hazards found include; poor tire conditions and drivers who fail to fill out inspection forms, or log books. By law, drivers are only permitted to be on the road for 10 hours every 24-hour period.

At one point during the blitz inspectors pulled over a pick-up in poor condition. After inspection, the driver was fined with $175.00 in tickets.

“If we see any other vehicles on the roadway that are in bad repair, we can’t ignore them because of the campaign,” says Constable Mig Roberts of traffic services.

With inspections averaging 15 minutes, over the 5-hour blitz police estimate inspecting 30-40 vehicles.
