Among the Canadian films being featured at the festival is One Week, a movie about a dying man's cross country trip across Canada. Director Michael McGowan says having a spot in the festival is a huge help for a Canadian director.

"I think it's the one time of the year where Canadian film is really sexy. And I think the fact that TIFF is such a huge marketplace internationally, gives your film a boost at exactly the right time."

Director Deepa Mehta's film Heaven on Earth is her 6th to take part in the festival, but despite being a veteran, she's never bored with the festival process.

"It gets more exciting every year, because I think it changes.  And you change, and your expectations change, and the landscape changes. TIFF is a different festival today then it was 10 years ago. And to grow with it, and to experiment with it, is very exciting."

Other Canadian movies being shown at the festival include Paul Gross' Passchendaele, which is the opening night film, Blindness, featuring Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo and Cooper's Camera, which stars Jason Jones and Samantha Bee from the Daily Show.
