Lori Paris Reports on the Latest Ipsos-Reid Poll
Canada 95
The latest numbers from Ipsos-Reid from CFRB and Can West Global take a look at feelings of separatism across the country.

It turns out, 15 percent of us think our province should pick up and leave Canada, with Quebecers in the lead, followed by Alberta residents, and Atlantic Canadians.

The idea of separatism is still strongest in Quebec, with 35 percent saying if given a choice, they would opt out of Canada, but Darrell Bricker of Ipsos-Reid says that's pretty much the standard since the referendum.

"While things haven't really changed much in Quebec, they really have changed a fair amount in Alberta, where about 18 percent said they would want their province to somehow leave Canada, by either joining the US or forming their own independent country. So it's something that's just burbling below the surface."

Marc Chalifoux of the Dominion Institute says the fact that the numbers remain largely unchanged since the referendum is not a cause for celebration.

"There's two ways of reading those numbers. There's an optimistic view that the numbers haven't really increased, but there's also a less optimistic view that the numbers haven't really decreased either. There's still a call, good year, bad year, by 35 percent of Quebecers to leave Canada.  I think we need to be doing more to talk about the things that we share in common as Canadians, and that includes Quebec."

Fourteen percent of Atlantic Canadians would leave Canada if they could, but the rest of the country - 90 percent in BC, 91 in Ontario and 98 percent in Saskatchewan and Manitoba believe the best thing for their province is staying in Canada.
