Listen to Tamara Baluja's report.

On Dec 10, 2006, 11 year old Birunthan Muralitharan heroically tried to save his friend Kisoban, who has fallen through thin ice into the water. Both boys died tragically.

Birunthan's memory was honoured by renaming Wharnaby Park to Birunthan Park. "I am very proud of my son. He was a hero", said his father, Muralitharan Nadarjah.

This was the very park where Birunthan used to play soccer with the Scarborough Rangers. His team-mates came up to his photo in pairs and placed red and white flowers down. Coach Ganga Tharmalinga says renaming the park is a fitting honour.

His team-mates Arjun says Birunthan was a great friend, who showed compassion, team spirit and a great love for soccer.

When Birunthan's family requested the park name be changed, Councillor Raymond Cho says the Scarborough Community Council unanimously adopted the recommendation. Two trees have also been planted to honour both boys.
