Cheryl Camack Reports Morgentaler Poll
Mortgentaler

Those who are opposed to abortion-rights activist Dr. Henry Mortgentaler’s appointment to the Order of Canada are a minority according to a new poll.

The recent Ipsos-Reid poll suggests two-thirds (65%) of Canadians support Morgentaler’s appointment, with Quebec (72%) leading in provincial support and Ontario (69%) a close second.

Women (68%) are more likely then men (61%) to support appointment, and younger Canadians (70%) aged 18 to 34 are more likely to support than Canadians 55 and older (59%).

“It’s not surprising that Canadian who are younger have more support then older for the simple reason that they have grown up in a generation since the 1980s which have experienced this and have access to it,” says John Wright of Ipsos-Reid.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba (51%) have the least provincial support.

Controversy still surrounds Morgentaler’s appointment as two former Order inductees have returned their metals to Ottawa.
