The Toronto Police Marine Unit launched the Safe Boating Awareness, concentrating on messages like no drinking while boating and always wearing life jackets.

The safety week was kicked off just in time for the long Weekend.
Officers are reminding boaters to never drink when on the water - and that includes everyone on the boat, not just the skipper. They're also asking people to always wear their life jackets and be prepared for the worst with a full tank of gas and extra supplies.
Toronto's search and rescue team gave a demonstration on Friday of how they take over when things go wrong.

Search and rescue technician Shane McAleer says Victoria Day Weekend is the start of what they call the "silly season" when they get an increase of calls to rescues boaters who go out on the water unprepared.
