When Megan was a toddler and starting to walk, we realized that she was physically unable to place her heels on the floor. She walked on her tip toes all of the time. So we began a long journey to find out why. To this day, there is still no diagnosis. During our search for answers to the toe walking, it was also discovered that Megan has 2 temporal lobe cysts so she has undergone several brain MRI's and CAT scans under the care of SickKids' neurosurgeon, Dr. Taylor. The cysts do not appear to be causing any harm, so Megan is now receives scans every 2 years.
Last June, Megan had surgery (performed by Dr. Naraynan) to lengthen her tendons so she could finally put her heels on the ground. Megan awoke from her surgery in 2 leg casts which she wore all summer. In September, 2007, she was fitted with her cool butterfly leg braces which she still wears today. As parents, it was an anxious time for us as we met with surgeons, other doctors, physiotherapists and more, and decided whether or not to proceed with the whole process of surgery, casting and braces. There were no guarantees as to whether or not it would be successful.
One thing we knew for sure, though, was that throughout this whole process, we were in the right place. SickKids provides such a safe and welcoming place for their little patients and their families. Today, Megan is an active and outgoing 5 year old who can finally walk with "flat feet" as she calls it, and is slowly able to spend more and more time without her braces. We are all very grateful to the amazing people who work at SickKids.
